A senior Congress leader from Tamil Nadu on Tuesday demanded that India should support a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to be moved by 19 countries demanding action against Sri Lanka for human rights violation during the last phase of the 30-year civil war.
Former MP and senior Congress leader R Anbarasu met External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and told him that India should support the resolution on "humanitarian considerations" and that a senior political leader from Tamil Nadu should be sent to Sri Lanka to have a post-war spot assessment of the situation.
"The Minister listened to us carefully and said that he will consult the Prime Minister regarding this," Mr. Anbarasu told reporters after the meeting. He added that National Security Advisor M K Narayanan was also present during the meeting.
Mr. Anbarasu said the 'special envoy' should be asked to suggest a suitable politically negotiated settlement to solve the decades-old ethnic strife.
A memorandum in this regard has been sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.(PTI)
