Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. karunanidhi has gone on a fast unto death to protest the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka. The Chief Minister started his protest today morning at the Anna Memorial in Chennai demanding to end the war in Sri Lanka immediately.
"Despite the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) calling for a ceasefire, the Sri Lankan government has done nothing. Rajapakse (Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse) has killed so many Tamils. Let him consider me also. I am fasting for Sri Lankan Tamil cause," said Karunandhi.Senior DMK leaders and Karunandhi's daughter Kanimozhi, who is Rajya Sabha MP, have gone to meet the Chief Minister.
His close circles say the decision to go on a fast was a spontaneous decision and Karunanidhi did not consult anyone. He has left home in the morning for his usual walk and has directed his vehicle to go to Anna Memorial. There he worshipped at Anna Memorial and then suddenly announced his fast seated on his wheal chair.
Hearing the news DMK party leaders and stalwarts have started gathering in front of Anna Memorial and protesting against Sri Lankan President and Indian Government, they are calling for India's immediate intervention to bring a halt to the war in Sri Lanka.
Upon receiving this message Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to CM Karunanidhi over the phone and requested Karunanidhi to end the fast. He assured to take action to enforce ceasefire in Sri Lanka. CM Karunanidhi has refused to accept the plea and had said he is willing to die for the cause.
The fasting campaign is spreading to many parts of Tamil Nadu, many DMK ministers have started to fast across Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister Karunanidhi's DMK party is an alliance partner of the Congress led UPA Government.
Sri Lanka repeatedly said that Indian Central Government did not insist on them for a ceasefire.
Meanwhile the BJP said it is opposed to the killing of civilians in Sri Lanka and demanded India impose sanctions on Colombo if this continued.
BJP's Senior Party Leader Sinha said "The party is for giving rights to northern Tamils within the integrity and territorial unity of Sri Lanka."
India "must make its intentions very clear to Sri Lanka. With diplomatic channels and a high power delegation not working, the only option left is imposing sanctions on Sri Lanka if it goes ahead and disregards Indian advice."

Cunning Jackal
This guy is a curse for Tamils and Tamil Naadu should be ashamed if this Jackal is reelected. All this fast unto death is an election gimmick. If he is so prepared to die for Tamils, why couldn't he request his central government ministers to resign. Does anyone read this news really believe this Jackal is genuine?
I bet as already planned he will come up with some excuse to break the fast. Or he may be eating behind the closed doors. Lets spit on this Jackal (if he is not infront of you, have a big banner with his picture and spit on this disgraceful human being).
