US playing it 'safe' asks Sri Lanka to turn page on its past

US asked Sri Lanka to turn the page on its past and engage Tamils to create a political arrangement that protects the rights of all its citizens.

“This is an opportunity for Sri Lanka to turn the page on its past and build a Sri Lanka rooted in democracy, tolerance and respect for human rights,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters Monday.

“Now is the time for the government to engage the Tamils, Sinhalese and other Sri Lankans to create a political arrangement that promotes and protects the rights of all Sri Lankans,” he added.

This comes at a time When the Tamils have completely lost faith on the sincerity of the Sri Lankan government and its' said democracy.

Welcoming the end of fighting, Kelly said the US was relieved that the immense loss of life and killing of innocent civilians appears to be over.

Providing basic assistance and services to the estimated 280,000 people who fled the fighting in the northern part of the country and expediting their return to their homes should be a top priority for the government, he said.

Kelly said it was “too early really to comment” whether the US still opposed the International Monetary Fund giving Sri Lanka a $1.9 billion loan, seen as vital to helping it recover from the global financial crisis and rebuild after the war.

“Let me just limit myself to saying that the Secretary (of State Hillary Clinton) will be consulting with friends and allies on next steps,” he said.

Asked why the US was not congratulating Colombo for concluding a decisive military victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Kelly said the US focus for now was on addressing the very urgent needs of the dispossessed, displaced Sri Lankan people.

“Our policy on the LTTE - the Tamil Tigers - has been very clear. We see them as a terrorist organization.”

One of the regular commentators of Tamil National said that US is playing a safe game. He said "the US state department instead of acting for justice in the aftermath of a huge manmade carnage is appealing to forget the past. In its appeal to Sri Lanka it has forgetten the main stake holder and the affected party in the whole episode of the 'war against Tamils' conducted defying all human norms; many thousands of Tamil civilians were massacred and more than 25,000 civilians were murdered or injured to death in the last 24 hours, after LTTE accepting US request to lay down arm."

I am sorry to say, that US, UK and other so called "civilized" countries take this immense loss of lives as "collateral" damage to "eliminate Terrorism". All these countries know about the massacre about to happen and did nothing to STOP the killers. Now they are talking about political solution. If they would have pressed Sri Lanka during 2002 ceasfire to bring a political solution, imagine how many lives would have saved. I really cannot understand the need or reason for UN to function. Why they have R2P (Responsibility to Protect) - Protect whom? Hope international body (whoever they are) will take on war crimes and bring the killers to justice. Also recognize Tamil Eelam. All the civilized people should fight for peace and justice to Tamils.

It is the time for the west to recognize the independent state for tamils. We can not live with our killers anymore. First of all, UN should take over the camps and ensure the safety of tamils. Any time anything can happen to those people. IC can not use the term 'terrorist' to ignore the rights of the tamils. Accept the self determination of tamils and separate the country. Have referandum under the UN supervision and find the permanent and peaceful solution that is 2 country solution.
